The Role

Responsibilities

  • Performs and directs routine, specific laboratory activities in accordance with established laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Applies and implements analytical chemistry techniques on state-of-the-art instrumentation to gather data analyzing samples.
  • Prepares samples for instrument analysis, interprets instrument recordings and documents test results.
  • Prepares media, reagents, and stains. Computes and measures quantity.
  • Ensures orderly and environmentally correct storage of media, reagents, supplies, samples, and equipment.
  • Author, follow, and revise SOPs and standard analytical procedures to meet Good Laboratory Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices compliance.
  • Prepare standards, reagents, and reaction solvent mixes/chemicals.
  • Ensures technically correct cleaning, sterilization, and solvent treatment of equipment.
  • Operates and maintains various laboratory equipment contracts and servicing agreements.
  • Requisitions, inspects, and distributes laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Records information on manual/computerized records, logs and related requests for analysis, shipping/transporting samples, ordering supplies/equipment, and status of water supply system.
  • Packs and ships, picks up or delivers supplies, samples, and equipment.
  • Must follow and implement all applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines. This includes the safe and proper operation of applicable machinery, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Set, understand, and meet daily goals.
  • Work, as part of, and guide a team to meet analytical schedules.
  • Employee may also be responsible for monitoring production line and collecting samples for analysis.
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written, with co-workers and management.
  • Practice and ensure good housekeeping habits throughout the facility with focus and personal contributions towards a clean and organized assigned work area.
  • Hands-on experience working with hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals and can implement safe practice and conditions to be incident free.
  • Manage chemical waste properly and schedule disposal as per state regulations.
  • Flexibility and the ability to shift work schedule according to production needs.
  • Analyzes laboratory data to determine quantity and quality of toxins, pathogens, chemical and biochemical constituents.
  • Prepares reports identifying samples, explains testing methods, and documents findings and conclusions of analysis.
  • Reviews background information, applicable regulations, the condition of the sample and the analysis requested.
  • Develops and recommends modified methods that will produce the desired results while improving cost efficiency.
  • Meets with management to review project plans and test results.
  • Assist with training lower-level chemists and laboratory technicians.
  • Maintain strict chain of custody procedures in handling, analysis, and preservation of sample retention.
  • Contacts include peers in other state and federal agencies, supply and instrument vendors and other laboratory customers.

Qualifications

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all employees
  • Skill in performing precise measurements, selecting test methods and procedures, generating, and interpreting chemical test data, and conducting data review.
  • Application, maintenance and troubleshooting state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and related computer equipment.
  • Knowledge of procedures, methods, and techniques of performing and interpreting chemical analysis, biochemistry as applicable to work assignments, statistics, principles and practices of sampling, chemical laboratory procedures, equipment, media, reagents and supplies, methods and techniques or recording, documenting, interpreting, and reporting chemical laboratory review.
  • Knowledge of protocols applicable to sample custody, preservation, storage, and disposal, testing instrumentation, procedures and equipment, state of federal laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to assigned projects and programs, test data interpretation.
  • Familiarity with OSHA guidelines for dealing with hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals
  • Understanding and adhering to applicable state and local laws and regulations as they pertain to the industry, safety regulations, local municipal codes and organizational rules, regulations, directives, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize particularly as it involves time sensitive procedures/issues, operate, and troubleshoot sensitive instruments, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment and software including word processing, database management, spreadsheet applications and email.
  • Ability in application, operation and troubleshooting of computerized analytical data systems, recordkeeping, technical report preparation, and general communication.

Additional Requirements

  • 4-year degree with relevant college courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics. Advanced degree is a plus
  • Experience in microbiology techniques, including DNA/RNA and PCR, qPCR, qPCr/real time PCR is preferred
  • 2-years Laboratory experience
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered, including internal experience
  • Must pass any and all required background checks.
  • Must be and remain compliant with all legal or company regulations for working in the industry.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must be approved to receive an Agent badge.

Working Conditions

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Physical demands - May be required to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift, carry and balance up to 50 pounds (200 pounds with assistance).
