Cannabis Job Market Overview:

The first retail stores for adult-use cannabis opened in Maine in October 2020, nearly four years after voters approved legalization. A medical cannabis program was established in 2009. There are currently 233 adult-use cannabis retail stores licensed in the state, and as of October, those stores had sold more than $114 million worth of the plant in 2022.

Requirements:

  • A completed application; it is recommended that you submit your application electronically in order to expedite processing.
  • A clear photograph of your face; Photo must be high resolution and have a plain white or off-white background. It is recommended that someone else take your photo on your behalf.
  • Must register at IdentoGO to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.
Cannabis Job Background Check Requirements:

A criminal history records check is required in order to obtain your Individual Identification Card. The Office of Marijuana Policy will not issue an Individual Identification Card to any individual with a disqualifying drug offense.

A "disqualifying drug offense" is defined as:

  • A conviction for a violation of a state or federal controlled substance law that is a crime punishable by imprisonment for one year or more, except that "disqualifying drug offense" does not include:
  • An offense for which the sentence, including any term of probation, incarceration or supervised release, was completed five or more years prior to the submission of an application for a license under the new cannabis laws;
  • An offense that consisted of conduct that would be authorized under the new laws or that, if the person convicted of the offense had been acting under the authority of a license pursuant to the laws, would have been authorized under the new legalization laws.
