Cannabis Job Market Overview:

Louisiana’s medical market officially launched in August 2019 after nearly five years of framework buildout. Currently only two medical manufacturers are licensed in the state — both at universities — and only 10 pharmacies (dispensaries) have been licensed by the state.

In April 2023, a House Bill 24 that would have legalized possession of cannabis for adults 21+ and would have established an adult-use market, failed after the House Criminal Justice Committee voted 9 - 4 to oppose the bill

Cannabis Job Requirements & Application Process:

Employee permits are required for all plant-touching cannabis workers in Louisiana per the state's official rules, though jobs are scarce due to manufacturing limitations and the small number of dispensaries licensed in the state.

Cannabis Job Background Check Requirements:

Individuals employed by a licensed medical marijuana facility may be required to undergo a background check.
